The carnation — originally called dianthus by the Greek botanist Theopharastus — is native to the Near East and has been cultivated for the last 2,000 years. Some scholars believe that the name "carnation" comes from "coronation" or "corone" (flower garlands), as it was one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns. The kangaroo paw's botanical name anigozanthus is derived from the Greek anoigo (to open), and anthos (flower.) The name reflects the kangaroo paw's way of opening widely from the blossom's base. The French botanist Jacques-Julian Houton de Labillardiere was the first European to collect kangaroo paw at his home near Esperance in 1792. It was proclaimed the flower emblem of Western Australia on November 9, 1960.

Chrysanthemums had been cultivated in Chinese gardens for more than 2,500 years before first being exhibited in England in 1795. Brought by visiting Buddhist monks, the chrysanthemum arrived in Japan in AD 400.

In China, the chrysanthemum's association with autumn stems from its tendency to bloom in the fall. Consequently, the ancient Chinese chose the Chrysanthemum ("chu hua") as their Flower for October, a symbol of the rest and ease that followed the season's final harvest. Mums were considered one of the four Chinese "noble plants" (the others being bamboo, the plum, and the orchid), and were the official badge of the Old Chinese Army. Since chrysanthemums were considered the flower of the Chinese noble class, they were prohibited in a lower-class person's garden. The Chinese believe that a chrysanthemum given to one's beloved, after its being used to wipe one's mouth after drinking wine, will ensure undying love and fidelity.
Called "kikus" in Japanese, chrysanthemums were featured on the Imperial Crest of Japan, and were so beloved by Japanese emperors that they sat upon chrysanthemum thrones. Sanseviera terkenal karena pesonanya yang menawan. Tekstur daunnya kaku dan meliuk bak gerakan ular. Kombinasi warnanya nyeleneh. Pesonanya tak berhenti sampai disitu. Coba lihat juga bagian pucuk daun pada beberapa jenis sanseviera dengan beragam keunikannya.
Beberapa jenis sanseviera terlahir dengan membawa karakter dan keunikan yang berbeda. Seperti sanseviera koleksi warga Malang – Hari Sukoco yang tengah mengalami mutasi warna. Melihat sosok uniknya, banyak yang mengira beragam jenis sansiviera ini ditanam dalam satu pot. Mengingat, karakter yang ditampilkan bervariasi. Ternyata usut punya usut, jenis sansiviera ini masih satu rimpang. Artinya, masih dalam satu indukan.
Konon, kata Hari, sanseviera mutasi warna ini merupakan hasil silangan 3 spesies berbeda. Ia menyebut jenis pagoda, green mould, dan satu sansiviera yang merupakan jenis mutasi. Hasil silangan inilah yang melahirkan sosoknya seperti saat ini. Bila dilihat teliti, ciri ketiga jenis ini cukup menunjukkan karakternya. Hanya, varian karakter ini tak berpadu. Masing-masing seakan berlomba memamerkan karakternya.
Itu terlihat di satu sisi tanaman yang mencolok dengan karakter pagodanya. Misalnya, warna hijau dipadu kuning yang mewakili karakter pagoda. Sedangkan di sisi lain, dominasi pesona warna kuning sebagai ciri paduan green mould dan pagoda, makin mempercantik tampilannya. Uniknya, muncul kuncup dengan membawa karakter beda dari kedua kakaknya. Dominasi warna silver, membuatnya terlihat elegan.
Keunikan ini juga berpadu manis dengan pola beragam di masing-masing daun dalam satu rimpang. Tak heran, banyak yang menawar sanseviera ini dengan harga tinggi, yaitu berkisar Rp 100 ke atas untuk sansevieria mutasi ukuran kecil (diameter 10 cm). Namun sayangnya, Hari hanya menjadikannya sebagai koleksi.
Mirip Kuku
Kelebihan itu baru masalah tampilan daunnya secara kasat mata. Dari kejauhan pun, sudah terlihat tampilannya. Namun rasa kagum akan makin terasa, ketika indera awas menyelidik lebih dekat. Akan menemukan sesuatu yang berbeda. Ya , ujung daunnya memiliki kuku. Maksudnya, bukan kuku dalam arti sebenarnya. Ujung daun sanseviera mutasi warna ini, terlihat berbeda dengan adanya sosok bentuk pucuk laiknya kuku.
Bentuk pucuk ini bukan merupakan akibat mutasi. Sebab, hampir semua jenis sanseviera memiliki karakter bentuk meruncing seperti ini. Namun karakter kuatnya, muncul dari hasil silangan. Hal inipun, lanjut Hari, ta bisa dijadikan patokan. Mengingat, proses mutasi pada tanaman sendiri, baik bentuk atau warna tak dapat dibuat secara manual. Hanya campur tangan alam yang bisa jadi peluang terjadinya mutasi. Terlebih, untuk tanaman sanseviera.
Dalam hal mutasi, sanseviera berbeda dengan tanaman kebanyakan yang dengan mudah dibentuk sesuai keinginan. Mengapa sanseviera sulit atau bahkan tak bisa dilakukan proses mutasi buatan? Salah satunya, proses mutasi pada sanseviera hanya bisa terbentuk karena faktor alam. Selain itu, bentuk mutasinya tak dapat diturunkan pada anakan. Artinya, jika dilakukan perbanyakan belum tentu mendapat hasil yang sama dengan induknya.
“Malah bisa lain bentuknya. Jadi, kalau menemukan varietas baru bisa dinamakan sendiri,” tandas Hari. [santi]
Kuatkan Karakter
Membentuk karakter pada suatu tanaman bukanlah hal mudah. Sama halnya dengan memperkuat karakter. Bahkan ada yang mengatakan, mempertahankan lebih sulit daripada membentuk. Pada intinya sama, yaitu memunculkan karakter yang ada. Hanya tak semua orang paham dengan kondisi ini. Sanseviera merupakan salah satu tanaman yang memiliki karakter bentuk kuat. Munculnya karakter ini merupakan proses alam. Artinya, penanganan untuk memperlakukan tanaman yang sudah mengeluarkan karakter harus disesuaikan dengan alam.
“Maksudnya, tanaman jangan dilakukan terlalu spesial. Sanseviera cukup dibiarkan, nanti karakternya akan muncul dengan sendirinya. Cukup diletakkan di tempat teduh, beres,” ujar Hari.
Lantaran, sanseviera sendiri merupakan jenis tanaman liar yang mudah tumbuh dimana saja. Tak heran, perlakuan spesial pada tanaman tak menjadikan tampilannya semakin bagus. Malah bisa menimbulkan berbagai kendala bagi tanaman. [santi]
Jenis Tanaman Bandel
Sansevieria memang termasuk tanaman hias yang sering disimpan di dalam rumah, karena tanaman ini bisa tumbuh dalam kondisi dengan sedikit air dan cahaya matahari. Tanaman ini membutuhkan sekitar 40% air untuk berkembang biak melalui umbi lapis. Selain itu, tanaman ini mampu bertahan dalam kondisi di dalam ruangan. Cukup dikeluarkan seminggu sekali, agar terkena matahari. Lalu, masukkan kembali ke dalam ruangan.
Kelebihan lain tanaman yang mempunyai nama populer lidah mertua ini, juga mampu bertahan di negara yang memiliki 4 musim. Akibatnya, ia banyak mengalami penyimpangan bentuk, corak, dan warna.
